The welcome sign
Best for: the photo everyone ends up taking anyway.
Coming into Laem Mae Phim from the Klaeng side, you’ll pass a large, colourful fish-shaped welcome structure marking the entrance to the beach. It’s become the de facto photo stop for the area, the kind of landmark that shows up in half the Facebook check-ins from here. It’s not a destination in itself, but it’s a good marker for orientation and a reasonable reason to pull over for two minutes.
Good to know:
- A short walk or drive further on brings you to the row of seafood restaurants at the eastern end of the beach
- Best light is late afternoon, with the sun behind you facing the sign
The boat trip to Koh Thalu
Best for: a full day away from the beach without leaving the area.
Koh Thalu sits a short boat ride offshore and is the trip most guests ask us about once they’ve settled in. It’s a protected island, so there’s a 300 THB conservation fee per foreign visitor paid in cash on arrival, but the water’s clearer than anything you’ll get from the mainland and there’s decent snorkelling over the coral. A handful of local operators run it, either as part of a wider island cruise or as a dedicated trip out to Koh Thalu specifically.

Skydiving
Best for: visitors who want one big thing to do and don’t mind paying for it.
There’s a working dropzone a short drive from Mae Phim, on the coast near Klaeng, running tandem jumps from around 13,000 feet with a USPA-certified instructor. You get close to a minute of freefall before the parachute opens, then several minutes coming down over the coastline with Koh Samet visible in the distance. It’s not something most people expect to find this far from Pattaya, which is part of the appeal.

- Book at least a day ahead
- Bring a passport or a photo of one
- No scuba diving in the 18 hours before your jump
Street food on the beach road
Best for: a low-effort dinner with no booking required.
The beach road through Mae Phim has the usual scatter of small stalls and carts alongside the sit-down restaurants, doing the things you’d hope for: grilled skewers, som tam, noodle soup, the odd dessert cart. It’s not a formal night market, more the kind of stall-by-stall grazing that’s normal on any Thai beach strip.

Lucky Viking sits along the beach road near Tequila Sunrise and Bad Boys, and it’s the one locals and long-stay expats mention first when you ask where to go for a drink that isn’t attached to a restaurant. Pool table, a laid-back crowd, and from what guests have told us, karaoke on certain nights.

None of these are the reason to come to Mae Phim, that’s still the beach itself. But they’re what turns a couple of days into a week: one big adrenaline hit, one proper day trip, and a couple of easy evenings you don’t have to plan. We’re a short walk from most of this, which makes it an easy base to work from rather than something you need a car for every day.
